This image from an exibition of Lise’s cochayuyo sculptures shows a series of complex woven strutures laid out in rows. These forms, created from aliving algae take on a totemic importance. They are almost funerial in the way they are composed, suggesting a celebration of something unknown within. . Some of the packages of leathery, waxy conchayuyo have been bounced or stitched with foreign elements, like a tensor, tighteneing and stretching the muscles of a body. They command silence and respect in the stillness of their tomb.

In an interview following one of Lises’s early exhibitions of her cochayuyo sculptures, she described the reaction of some of her friends to her using seaweed “Cochayuyos? Oh ….how disgusting”
For several years Lise had been travelling to the beach to collect the algae, using it’s wild and flexible structure to create knotted and folded sculptures ,magnificent in their pulchritude, a true testament to the stunning beauty of nature.
Her forms are complex, enveloping, protecting a secret within, unexplained and mysterious .

Lisa studied ceramics in London and Barcelona, and

Lisa studied ceramics in London and Barcelona, and continues to command an important presence as a ceramicist having exhibited in many major cities including Paris, Barcelona London and Santiago. Much of her work in ceramics is creating vessels which are open and acceptable in form. Her sculptures in cochhayuyo represent vessels, but they are closed. more mysterious, less accessible. We do not know what might lie within.

Lisa has highlighted the flexibility of the seaweed, creating complex packages of intricately knotted material, rich in colour and texture. The cochayuyo, of which a large piece in the ocean can produce 100 million eggs in twelve hours, has been woven into a cocoon, a womb like structure protecting something unseen and unknown.

The sculpture illustrated is young and fresh, as seen from its rich, dark colour. It is at the beginning of its life, an embryonic mass, survival uncertain.

Lise’s sculpture are not immediately accessible. They are sometimes beguiling, more often unsettling, always intriguing. They explore cycle of life – the end is never certain.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

I am @ARTIST.ROMANYMARKBRUCE and I will be running @encountersarspace feed for this 6th week.
I am delighted to present the work of Lise Moller.

In 2012, I announced on my website that I had purchased a seaweed sculpture – that sculpture was by Lise Moller @ tallerlisemoller. with whom I was exhibiting at @encountersartspace. It had been a long time since I had had such a visceral reaction to a work of art.

More of the sculpture I bought later in the week.

Lise’s choice of material for sculpting is intriguing, and it is this body of work I shall explore, namely her work using Cochayuyo, a large, robust species kelp seaweed, found on the shores of Chile, and has been used in Chiulean cuisine for centuries

In my home country of Ireland we harvest a seaweed, Dulse which is also used as both a food and a medicine. Maybe this is why I was drawn to Lise’s work.

Lisa has harvested the cochayuyo and used it to create wonderfully evocative and captivating sculptural packages. The algy has a unique honeycomb structure within it’s blades which helps it avoid being damaged by the strong waves, and which gives is a leathery texture, and Lise has transformed it into intriguing and sublime forms.
