I fell into the world of sculpting quite by chance many years ago. I decided to go on a photography course, photographing modern buildings being my passion at the time. Unfortunately, or fortunately, photography classes were full so I signed up for sculpting classes thinking I would be able to swap over to the photography classes once some pupils fell by the wayside. I never did, because sculpting very quickly became a passion.
In Brighton I studied under Teresa Martin for several years, and started exhibiting in the Brighton Festival. It had always been an ambition of mine to have a sculpture on public display, still I’m not sure that I ever thought that this ambition would be realised.
Five years ago I was stopped on the street and asked if I would submit an entry for a competition for a memorial to commemorate those who have died and those whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. I was lucky to be shortlisted for the competition and went on to be commissioned to create the memorial. I spent two years designing and creating the sculpture, which was unveiled on 9 October 2009 by David Furnish and stands in the New Steine Gardens in Kemptown, Brighton.
