If you are lucky enough to receive art as a gift or indeed have treated yourself, now may be the perfect time to consider some top tips on how best to hang your works to achieve the best results in your home.
A room can be brought alive by art, whether these are large or small, expensive investments or simply family art memories, they all combine to create interest. Mixing and matching your pieces can work best, try not to worry about everything co-ordinating but more that you are creating a wall of interest, different sizes, shapes and themes can become a feast for the eyes and mind. Do not be afraid to hang contemporary pieces in traditional settings and in reverse traditional pieces in contemporary spaces. The juxtaposition of these surroundings and then the art themes can create a very stimulating visual impact.
Arranging the pieces you want on a floor or table first can help you decide what and where each piece can go, or sketch a plan on paper and see what feels good for you. They do not have to be symmetrical or placed in an orderly fashion, different shapes and sizes create interest and take the eye to explore and be inspired. We all have blank walls that can become our hanging canvas to display our works to lift and motivate us and all its viewers.
My works are contemporary pieces using colour to stimulate the mind and inspire thought. I would say colour is an obsession for me, so when arranging a wall of art I may use colour as a major influencing factor for me. Most likely colour would influence everyone in some way, whether that comes from your interior design colour choices, this could affect your wall hanging designs. Different sizes also work well to vary the display, starting with the largest and fitting in and around smaller sizes and shapes to create interest. Naturally framing is also an important factor of all artworks, so this should be considered – frames can be brightly coloured or maybe some pieces are purely on canvas. Decide what works for you in your home styling, the fun is in the irregularity, the individuality of your personal display. Some pieces could even rest against a mantlepiece creating texture and variety.
